It existed from 1 January 1923 until nationalisation on 1 January 1948, when it was divided into the new British Railways' Eastern Region, North Eastern Region and partially the Scottish Region.

London and North Eastern Railway - Steam 2-6-2 - Summerseat, Lancashire, United Kingdom, February 10, 2008 - LNER V2 no. 4771 Green Arrow crosses the river at Summerseat on its last trip northwards on the East Lancs Railway. In a few weeks, this lovely loco will be a permanent non-steamable static exhibit. This is because it needs a new cylinder block and the owners, The National Railway Museum, will not sanction a new one, because it will spoil the originality of the loco.
London and North Eastern Railway - Steam 4-6-2 - National Railway Museum, York, United Kingdom, July 05, 2008 - I'm an LMS fan myself, but I have to say that steam locos don't come much more handsome than this. Seen at "The Great Reunion" at the National Railway Museum at York during the brief spell of sunshine. The fastest steam locomotive in the world, 4468 Mallard reposes for all to photograph. An unusual sight in itself, as it normally stays indoors at the Museum.
London and North Eastern Railway - Steam 4-6-2 - Grange Over Sands, Cumbria, United Kingdom, August, 1978 - Steam returned to British main lines in a big way in 1978. 4472 Flying Scotsman is seen here with the Cumbrian Coast Express, which ran weekly throughout the summer from Carnforth to Sellafield and back. It is seen here skirting Morecambe Bay at Kents Bank at Grange Over Sands.
London and North Eastern Railway - Steam 2-6-2 - Ribblehead, Cumbria, United Kingdom, March, 1978 - 1978 was a big year for main line steam specials. Ten years after the end of BR steam, the Settle to Carlisle route was opened up to steam specials. Here we see 4771 Green Arrow crossing Batty Moss viaduct at Ribblehead returning with the first trip over the line in the preserved steam era. It was Easter Monday and it was very cold and snowy as Easter came early that year, sadly Green Arrow is now only a static exhibit.
